São João de Deus, a story to tell
It’s curious to notice how the Portuguese selections for the third Porto/Post/Doc festival revolve around the idea of community. This is a central theme to the festival's own ambition, which aims to reactivate and renew a community of film lovers in downtown Porto; but it’s also a common thread among the three national feature films, each very different from one another, produced independently and filmed in various locations around the world. This idea of community is, in fact, the thread that connects Ama-San by Cláudia Varejão (Tuesday, the 29th, at 7 PM; Friday, the 2nd, at 9:30 PM), Eldorado XXI by Salomé Lamas (Thursday, the 1st, at 10 PM), and Tarrafal by Pedro Neves (Tuesday, the 29th, at 10 PM; Friday, the 2nd, at 6:30 PM; always at Rivoli): all of these films offer insights into threatened or precarious communities, whose existence stems from the stubbornness of resistance and the simple necessity to survive. It is, in every sense, an excellent selection. (by Jorge Mourinha)
