The Forgotten, by Pedro Neves, in "Expresso" newspaper

A documentary that portrays the forgotten poverty of Porto, by journalist and Expresso collaborator Pedro Neves, is one of the productions selected for the national competition at DocLisboa 2009. "Os Esquecidos" will be shown next Monday, 19th, at the Cinema Londres, and on Saturday, 24th, at Culturgest, in Lisbon.

"It all started when Pedro Neves, the journalist, realized that, in the Porto district alone, around half a million people live in poverty. "I called my friend José António Pinto, who is a social worker at the Campanhã Parish Council, and asked him if he wanted to work on this documentary with me. His presence helped to open doors that are usually always closed."

"In this film", says the director, "I went to places where collective hope has died, where there are people alive on the verge of social death. They are faces that see life as a punishment, social actors stripped of any material success. They are tired looks of so much bad luck, because you can't talk about bad luck when you've never understood the meaning of the word... They're women and men, forgotten."
